Airport, railway station, trams, Uber, night buses — a complete guide to transport in Krakow with up-to-date prices. Get anywhere without the stress.
Krakow is one of the easiest cities in Europe to navigate. A compact Old Town, efficient public transport and cheap airport transfers mean you do not need a car to get everywhere. This guide contains up-to-date prices, journey times and practical tips — no waffle.
John Paul II International Airport at Balice is about 11 km west of the centre. You have several options:
Our recommendation? The train during the day — fast, cheap, no traffic. In the evening or at night — Uber or Bolt, since the night bus runs infrequently.
Krakow Glowny station sits right next to the Old Town. The walk to the Main Square is just 1.2 km — 10 to 15 minutes on foot. The route leads through Galeria Krakowska and the Planty park (a green belt surrounding the Old Town).
If you prefer to ride, tram stops are beside the station. Lines 1, 3, 6, 8, 13, 18 stop at "Teatr Slowackiego" and "Poczta Glowna" — both are in the very heart of the Old Town. Journey time: 2-3 minutes.
Krakow's nights do not end at midnight — and neither does the transport. Here are your options for getting home after a night out:
Krakow's public transport consists of trams and buses operated by MPK Krakow. The network is dense and well organised. Current ticket prices from March 2026:
Where to buy a ticket? Most conveniently via mobile apps: Jakdojade, SkyCash, mPay or iMKA. Paper tickets can be purchased from machines at stops or from the driver (cash only). Remember: paper tickets must be validated in the machine by the door as soon as you board. The fine for not having a valid ticket is around 280 PLN — not worth the risk.
This is one of Krakow's greatest advantages: the Old Town is almost entirely pedestrianised. Motor traffic is banned within the Planty ring, so you walk freely without noise or exhaust fumes.
The Old Town measures just 800 x 800 metres. Walking from one end to the other takes less than 15 minutes. The Main Square — the heart of Krakow — is a 200 x 200 m plaza, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe.
Want to see Kazimierz (the Jewish quarter, packed with bars and restaurants)? It is an additional 15-minute walk south of the Main Square. You can explore the entire centre of Krakow on foot without any difficulty.
Arrived by car? Park up and forget about it — you will not be driving into the Old Town anyway. Here are your options:
